NinjaTrader 8 Launcher

One-click startup with automated maintenance and market-hours safety checks

Free tool for serious NinjaTrader traders managing multiple accounts

I use this every day to start NinjaTrader — it saves a ton of time.

The Problem
  • NinjaTrader's local data bloats over time, slowing performance
  • Stale cache data causes chart loading delays
  • Old workspace backups clutter the folder and confuse restores
  • Force-closing NinjaTrader mid-session leaves orders unmanaged
  • Manual cleanup is tedious and easy to forget
  • Typing passwords every login wastes time
The Solution
  • Four cleaning modes — Safe, Dev, No Clean, and Deep Reset
  • Clears cache and snapshots automatically every launch
  • Removes stale workspace backup files
  • Warns you before force-closing NinjaTrader while the market is open
  • Archives your bar data and SQLite database before a Deep Reset
  • Copies your password to clipboard for instant login

Four Launch Modes

Safe Mode

The recommended default. Fast cleanup before every launch.

  • Clears db\cache\ and db\snapshot\
  • Removes workspace backup files
  • Takes just a few seconds
Dev Mode

Deeper clean for after strategy changes or indicator updates.

  • Everything in Safe mode
  • Also clears db\messages\
  • Useful after NinjaScript changes
No Clean

Launch NinjaTrader without any cleanup. Handles password only.

  • Skips all file cleanup
  • Still copies password to clipboard
  • Good for quick restarts
Deep Reset

Troubleshooting option for a platform that won't behave.

  • Backs up then deletes the SQLite database
  • Leaves your bar data alone by default
  • Requires typing DELETE to confirm
Automated Maintenance

Four launch modes let you choose the right level of cleanup for any situation — from a quick cache clear to a full database reset.

Machine Parity Check

Run NinjaTrader on two machines? The Data Fingerprint tool hashes your bar data so you can tell instantly whether both boxes hold identical history — the reason backtests disagree.

Secure Password Handling

Stores your NinjaTrader password using Windows DPAPI encryption, copies to clipboard on launch, and auto-clears after 60 seconds.

Market-Hours Guard

Force-closing NinjaTrader kills the process without flattening anything. The launcher checks the CME session first and makes you confirm twice while the market is open.

How to Use

1Download

Save StartNinjaTrader.exe to a permanent folder.

2Create Shortcut

Right-click the EXE and create a desktop shortcut for easy access.

3First Launch

Close NinjaTrader if running, then double-click. You'll be asked for your path and password once.

4Done!

Use this shortcut every time. It cleans, launches, and handles your login automatically.

What the Launcher Does

[1/6] Detects NinjaTrader install path automatically

[2/6] Checks if NinjaTrader is already running — offers to close or wait

[3/6] Runs selected cleanup mode (Safe / Dev / No Clean / Deep Reset)

[4/6] Launches NinjaTrader and waits for startup

[5/6] Decrypts stored password and copies to clipboard

[6/6] Auto-clears clipboard after configurable timeout (default 60 seconds)

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The launcher only interacts with NinjaTrader's local data folders and the Windows clipboard. It doesn't modify Windows system settings and it never touches your trading accounts, orders, or positions. It cleans the same cache files you'd manually delete yourself - just faster and automatically.

One request, and we'll be specific about it. On launch it checks futures.aeromir.com for announcements - new releases, service notices - and displays any it finds above the menu. The request sends only two things: the launcher's own version number and your Windows machine name. No password, no account details, no trading data, nothing about your strategies or positions. It times out after 3 seconds and fails silently, so the launcher works normally offline. You can switch it off entirely under Settings → Toggle Server Messages.

The launcher detects it and gives you three options: cancel the launch, force-close NinjaTrader automatically, or close it manually and press Enter to continue. If the CME session is open, force-close requires a second typed confirmation and warns you that killing the process does not flatten positions or cancel working orders. Force-close can also be disabled entirely in Settings.

No. This is a common false positive with compiled PowerShell scripts. Windows Defender sometimes flags executables created with PS2EXE (the tool used to compile this) because the technique of wrapping scripts into EXEs is occasionally used by bad actors. You can safely click "Run anyway" or add an exception. The source code is a standard PowerShell script - nothing malicious.

Your password is stored locally at Documents\NinjaTrader 8\NT_pwd.dat using Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI). This means the encrypted file is tied to your Windows user account and can only be decrypted on your machine by your user. Your password never leaves your computer.

Run the launcher and go to Settings → Set / Reset Password. The old stored password will be cleared and you'll be prompted to enter and confirm your new one. You can also clear the password entirely from the same menu.

Your strategies, indicators, templates, and workspaces are stored in separate folders that are never touched. Deep Reset removes cached UI data and the SQLite database, which is backed up first and rebuilt automatically on startup.

Your downloaded bar data is left alone by default. Deleting it is a separate, opt-in step - you have to enable it in Settings first, then type BARS to confirm - because some data providers won't backfill the depth you've accumulated. When you do delete it, the launcher archives db\day\, db\minute\ and db\tick\ to db_backups\ first, and if that archive fails, nothing is deleted.

One thing to know: the SQLite database also holds your instrument definitions, rollover dates, and merge policy. After a Deep Reset, re-check those under Tools before running backtests - a reverted merge policy doesn't throw an error, it just quietly returns different numbers.

If you run NinjaTrader on two machines - say a workstation and a VPS - the same strategy on the same instrument can produce different backtest results. Almost always the cause is that the two machines hold different bar data, because each one downloaded its own history at a different time.

The fingerprint hashes the file names and sizes in db\day\, db\minute\ and db\tick\ for a given instrument and shows you the result alongside the NinjaTrader build number. Run it on both machines and compare. Matching hashes mean identical bars. If they differ, use NinjaTrader's Export and Import of historical data to sync them - re-downloading on both machines does not guarantee a match. The check is read-only and changes nothing.

The launcher keeps rolling backups (5 by default) in Documents\NinjaTrader 8\db_backups\, named by timestamp — for example NinjaTrader_20260315_083022.sqlite. To restore, close NinjaTrader, copy the backup you want into Documents\NinjaTrader 8\db\, and rename it to NinjaTrader.sqlite. Then restart NinjaTrader normally.

Archived bar data lives in the same folder under historical_ plus a timestamp. To restore it, close NinjaTrader and move the day, minute and tick folders back into Documents\NinjaTrader 8\db\.

This launcher is designed for NinjaTrader 8 on Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server editions. It automatically detects standard install paths. If you installed NinjaTrader to a custom location, use Settings → Set NinjaTrader Path and the launcher will remember it in NT_path.cfg.

Yes. The launcher writes a timestamped entry to Documents\NinjaTrader 8\StartupLog.txt each time it runs, recording the mode used, the launcher and NinjaTrader versions, the path, and whether a password file was present. The log auto-trims to the last 200 entries. You can also export a full diagnostics snapshot from the main menu.
